The Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) knows that assessing greenhouse gas emissions is the first step to making reductions. The CDP is a British nonprofit at the forefront of disclosure advocacy, they are champions of transparency in environmental reporting as well as strategies to address environmental impacts. The CDP represents 655 institutional investors with $78 trillion in assets. The CDP is an international, not-for-profit organization providing the only global system for companies and cities to measure, disclose, manage and share vital environmental information. The latest CDP Global 500 Climate Change report, was co-written with professional services firm PwC.

CDP harnesses the power of market forces to collect information from companies on their greenhouse gas emissions and assessment of climate change and water risk and opportunity. The CDP has the largest global collection of primary climate change and water data. This data is helpful to business strategy, investment and policy decisions.

Companies showing real climate leadership tend to develop long term strategies that look at least a decade into the future. A total of 78% reported that climate change is being integrated into their corporate strategies, up from 68% last year.

According to the 2012 CDP report here are the world’s top 10 companies, by both emissions disclosure and performance:

  1. Bayer
  2. Nestle
  3. BASF
  4. BMW
  5. Gas Natural SDG
  6. Diageo
  7. Nokia Group
  8. Allianz Group
  9. UBS
  10. Panasonic
