Last week Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced that he is not going to the United Nations Climate Summit scheduled for September 23rd in New York. This summit is intended to prepare the way for a much needed global climate agreement in 2015.
The move is consistent with the Harper Conservatives flagrant disregard for climate action. They have worked to undermine a global agreement on climate change so that they can continue their unbridled exploitation of fossil fuels and the tar sands in particular. The tar sands are widely regarded as some of the most greenhouse gas intensive oil reserves on earth.
Canada was one of the nations that worked to undermine a successful outcome at last year’s Conference of the Parties (COP 19). Canada is also an international laggard on emissions reductions. In 2011, the Harper government withdrew from the Kyoto Accord and admitted that it will not be able to meet its carbon reduction agreement.
