This briefing will take place online on Monday, March 15th from 8 pm to 9pm ET. The guest speaker will be Eliza Sweren-Becker, from the Brennan Center for Justice who will discuss the latest wave of voter suppression bills. Her presentation will be followed by a question and answer period.
In reaction to historic voter turnout in 2020, dozens of states are now considering a new wave of restrictive voter-suppression laws that could make it even harder for young people, poor people, and people of color to vote. This is not only a threat to democracy; it also directly impacts the political power of the environmental movement and most of the voters whom we target at the Environmental Voter Project.
Eliza Sweren-Becker serves as counsel in the Voting Rights & Elections Program at the Brennan Center for Justice. She litigates voting rights cases, counsels lawmakers and administrators on voting legislation and policy, researches voting law trends, and comments on voting issues in a variety of media outlets. Prior to joining the Brennan Center, Eliza was a litigation associate in private practice. She previously served as a Ford Foundation Fellow in the ACLU’s Speech, Privacy, and Technology Project, and as a law clerk in federal district court in California. Eliza received a JD from Harvard Law School and a master’s degree in public policy from the Harvard Kennedy School. She holds a bachelor’s degree in international relations from Brown University.
