10/10/10 Proves the Environmental Movement is Bigger than Ever

On October 10th 2010, people around the world acted together to shatter the myth that the global climate movement is in decline. The event known as 10/10/10: The Global Work Party will be remembered as the day when a single environmental message blanketed more of the planet than ever before.

People have made The Global Work Party the single largest event in human history. This means that 350.org has succeeded in beating their own record set last year by the International Day of Climate Change Action, which CNN called, “the most widespread day of political action in the planet’s history.”

Last year’s 350.org event saw 5200 events in 181 countries. This year 188 countries are participating with over 7000 climate solutions projects. With the exception of four countries (North Korea, Andorra, Equatorial Guinea, and San Marino) the entire planet is engaged.

Environmentally helpful actions are occurring in forests, wetlands, parks, communities, schools, homes, churches, mosques, synagogues and temples. This is a powerfully unifying event that transcends national boundaries, as well as ethnic and religious divisions. Climate change is the only issue that has galvanized international support and mobilized people to act all around the globe.

The global climate movement is enormous, easily the single largest social action movement the world has ever seen. This torrential outpouring of action for the planet demonstrates the unyielding commitment of the environmental movement.

A disappointing outcome at COP15, misinformation from the old energy economy and Republican obstructionism in the US Congress has not killed efforts to combat climate change. On the contrary, the environmental movement is bigger, more diverse, and more creative than ever.

Millions of people renewed their commitment to the fight against climate change. This event demonstrates that no matter how long it takes, people around the world remain committed to tangible actions to combat climate change.
