EDF Trains Business Leaders Through their Climate Core Program

Almost all 21st century MBA programs include some for of sustainability schooling, however, Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) adds valuable real world experience through practical onsite training. Through a program called Climate Corps, EDF provides training to young MBA students so that they may be better prepared to make a difference in the business world. This premier fellowship program recruits and train top graduate students and embeds them in leading organizations to provide expert hands-on support for your energy management initiatives.


Since 2008, EDF has placed fellows in more than 300 companies like General Motors, Apple, REI, Google, AT&T, and the City of Boston. These people have helped their host companies and institutions realize $1.4 billion in cumulative energy savings. That’s more than 1.8 million metric tons of greenhouse gas reductions—equivalent to taking 390,000 cars off the road.

These young MBA students have created tools and resources that can be replicated at other organizations. Resources like the Smart Energy Diagnostic Rubric and the EDF Climate Crops Energy Handbook are freely available for use by any company interested in saving energy.

Over 600 Climate Corps alums are now rising into leadership positions in business and civil society. Jenny McColloch, a 2011 Climate Corps fellow, was recently named Director of Global Sustainability at McDonald’s. And she’s not alone—72 percent of Climate Corps alums currently work on sustainability and half are in managerial positions or higher.

Through the Climate Corps alumni network, current and past fellows collaborate to share best practices and amplify each other’s successes. In Boston, they’ve teamed up with the Boston Green Ribbon Commission and MIT Sloan School of Management to create a Peer Learning Network of EDF Climate Corps host organizations in the Boston area with the goal of sharing best practices and speeding the transition to a low-carbon economy.
