The majority of the world’s green schools can be found in a handful of countries. According to Eduniversal rankings of the best sustainable development
and environmental management masters degrees some countries stand out both for the number of schools offering green masters degrees and for their respective positions within this ranking system. When broken down into regions GreenMetric’s top 50
gives Europe the edge with 22 universities followed by North America
with 13 universities. The Far East has 9 universities in the top 50.
Latin America, Australia and the Middle East came in 4th, 5th and 6th
with 3, 2, and 1 universities respectively.

Similar results were found in the Eduniversal rankings. According to this list the world’s leading countries as a composite of both rank and total number of schools are the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Switzerland, and Spain (Portugal receives an honorable mention).

1. There has been some concern about the number of sustainability-focused degrees and the amount of related information offered in US business schools.  However, on the Eduniversal list the US takes top spot for the number of schools and their ranking. The US is home to the second, third, and fourth placed schools and has a total of eight schools in the top 100.

2. Although the United Kingdom has more schools in the top 100 than the US they are not as highly ranked with only one school breaking the top 10 and only 2 in the top 20. The UK has 13 schools in the top 100 and seven in the top 50. A similar
ranking from GreenMetric indicates that that the UK has the most sustainability-focused schools of any country in the world.

3. Canada has five schools in the top 50 and six in the top 100.

4. Switzerland has five schools in the top 100 and 3 in the Top 50.

5. Spain is home to highest ranking sustainability-focused
educational institution.  The country has two schools in the top 50 and four in the top 100. Spain’s neighbor Portugal deserves an honorable mention for having two schools in the top 20 and three in the top 50.
